Subramaniam Appointed as Division Director for UAB Maternal-Fetal Medicine

July 26, 2024, Hadley Turner, UAB Heersink School of Medicine

Akila Subramaniam, M.D.

The UAB Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology announces Akila Subramaniam, M.D. as the Division Director for the Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) effective August 1, 2024. This transition marks an exciting new chapter for this division, and we are thrilled to see Dr. Subramaniam take on this pivotal leadership role.

Subramaniam has already made significant contributions within the department, particularly during her time serving as Interim Division Director following the departure of Brian Casey, M.D. to West Virginia University. Her leadership during this period has been instrumental in guiding the division through this transition.

Dr. Subramaniam’s academic and professional background is nothing short of remarkable. A native of Metairie, Louisiana, she earned her Bachelor of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2004 and pursued post-graduate work in Social Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2003. Her pursuit of excellence continued with her Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health degrees from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans in 2008. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at UAB in 2012, followed by a combined fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine and Medical Genetics at UAB in 2016. She is presently an Associate Professor with Tenure and holds the Bruce Harris, Jr., MD, Endowed Professorship in Obstetrics/Gynecology.
