Background: Monitoring the progress in reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) using the composite coverage index (CCI) is crucial to evaluate the advancement of low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) towards the attainment of Sustainable Development Goal target 3. We present current benchmarking for 70 LMICs, forecasting to 2030, and an analysis of inequities within and across countries.

The initiative radically changed the narratives about the underlying factors contributing to inequities in birth outcomes of Black women, altered the way we currently approach addressing inequities, and holds the keys for transforming practice to a more holistic and systematic approach to building sustained organizational structures in maternal and child health that accelerate the achievement of birth equity.

Areport released this spring by the National Center for Health Statistics summarized the strikingly high rates of maternal deaths in the US. In 2021, the US rate of maternal deaths that occurred while pregnant or within 42 days of being pregnant was 32.9 per 100 000 live births—more than 10 times the estimated rates for other high-income countries including Australia, Israel, and Spain, which all hover between 2 to 3 deaths per 100 000 live births.
